German digital solutions company Hexagon has partnered with Oracle Red Bull Sim Racing to launch a competition aiming to connect esports with the world of engineering.

Known as the Future Skills Challenge, the competition aims to ‘inspire a new wave of talent’ looking to build skills in digital and engineering sectors.

According to a release, the competition organised by Hexagon and the sim racing division of Oracle Red Bull Racing is open to ‘gamers, students, and industry professionals with a passion for esports, engineering, motorsport, or advanced technology.

To enter the competition, participants must complete a set of puzzles and problem-solving exercises which are designed to simulate engineering dynamics and calculate cognitive skills.

“We are delighted to be launching this groundbreaking competition with long-standing Oracle Red Bull Racing partner Hexagon,” said Joe Soltysik, Head of Esports at Red Bull Racing and Red Bull Technology.

“As the engineer role in sim racing becomes increasingly complex, the line between real and virtual has never been so close. By working with Hexagon, we can create new pathways for budding engineers to build a career within esports, manufacturing, and beyond.”

Hexagon says the tests “reflect how the fast-paced environment of esports parallels core competencies in high-performance engineering and automotive manufacturing.”

The competition will see six individuals earn an invitation to a showcase event taking place at the Red Bull Sim Racing Erena located within its Milton Keynes headquarters in September.

The individuals will receive coaching sessions from Oracle Red Bull Sim Racing drivers in addition to a behind-the-scenes tour around the Formula One (F1) team’s facilities. In addition, the winner will receive a Fanatec sim racing bundle worth €4,000 (~£3,377).
